Normandy-Style Estate in the Heart of the Greenwich, Connecticut, Countryside

Normandy-Style Estate in the Heart of the Greenwich, Connecticut, Countryside

Listing of the Day

Location: Greenwich, Connecticut

Price: $8.925 million

This 1927 Normandy-style estate offers 13,063 square feet of interior space, seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms in a prime enclave of Greenwich, Connecticut.

"The house is located in the Khakum Wood Association, which is the heart of mid-country Greenwich," listing agent Robin Kencel said. "It’s one of the top-three locations in all of Greenwich."

"At six acres, this is one of the largest properties in the neighborhood," she said.

The stone house was designed by architect Harrie T. Lindeberg, who was known for his American country houses.

"He was quite a pedigreed architect in the 1920s and ’30s," Ms. Kencel said.

The sellers, who are only the second owners of the property, have been in the home for 45 years, she said. "They first came out as newlyweds who were living in Manhattan."

"The house has been so lived in, so loved," she added. "They raised five children here."

The house needs some updates, Ms. Kencel said. "It needs a new kitchen and new bathrooms."

"But the paneling, mouldings, the fireplaces are so of the time, and they can’t be replicated," she said. "The rooms are just beautifully proportioned."

Other architectural and design details include French doors, lead-paned windows, a Ludovici tile roof, and original hardware.

The home features a grand 19-by-39-foot living room with a chestnut and pine cathedral ceiling and a large knotty pine-paneled library.

The large entrance hall and reception room, the bay-windowed dining room and the library all have fireplaces. There is also a stone-floored rathskeller with a fireplace on the lower level.

The owners added central air conditioning in 2005, Ms. Kencel said.

Neighborhood Notes

Khakum Wood, which was built as a residential enclave in the 1920s and ’30s, has 150 acres and 47 residences, said Ms. Kencel, who lives in the neighborhood.

"You feel like you’re in the country," she said, yet it’s "seven minutes to downtown Greenwich, five minutes to the Merritt Parkway, seven minutes to Whole Foods."
