Byram, a mile-long enclave of Greenwich, is defined by Long Island Sound on one side and the Byram River on the other. It was one of the earliest settlements in Greenwich, founded in the 1660s, and was said to first be home to the sea captains who ran regular trade routes to and from New York City up the coastline. In the early years, Byram was primarily a fishing and farming community, as well as home to some of the area’s largest quarries. One of these was located on what is now Byram & Rosenwald Park. This park holds the only public pool in Greenwich and boasts public tennis courts, ball fields, and water activities including a let-in for kayaks and other small water vessels. The industry expanded in Byram during the 19th century with a number of foundries and furnaces attracted to the convenient means of transporting coal and raw materials via the Byram River and Long Island Sound. Though the area initially attracted primarily Yankees and Germans, as factories expanded in Byram, a variety of immigrants landed here, including a large number of Irish, Italians, and Poles.

 

For many years, Byram was more associated with East Port Chester rather than the town of Greenwich and when residents said they were going “downtown” they meant Port Chester. Byram was not named such until 1947; rumor has it that the name came about to commemorate the activity of buying illegal rum offshore during the days of prohibition. Hence the name-Buy Rum to Byram.

 

Byram continued to develop with homes of all sizes from the gracious mansions that lined the waterfront to the smaller residences of the factory workers, located inland. As land was bought up and homes built, the commercial aspect of Byram also flourished with a downtown that had shops, services, a school, library, and fire station. The building of I-95 in the 1950s is believed to have adversely impacted the anticipated growth of Byram, as land that was expected to be developed for mid-range priced homes, was purchased by the State and used to build the highway.

 

The real estate in Byram, CT, is enjoying a resurgent in recent years. The Byram River waterfront has seen the development of commercial and residential properties. Top-flight restaurants such as Tarry Lodge, the Kneaded Bread, Nesa, and Bar Taco have energized the nightlife in nearby Portchester. Named in honor of two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, the Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink has been operating since 1973. Its fun and the popular enclosed ice rink are open for public skating sessions during the months of September through March. Skate rental is available on site. Its school offers group and private lessons in both ice skating and ice hockey. Skaters from all over the area also look forward to competing in the Town-wide Figure Skating Competition which the rink hosts annually.

 

 

 

The Byram Shubert Library, originally opened in 1931, is the cultural heart of the neighborhood. The library offers a new collection of current popular books, magazines, movies, and CDs. Its building boasts a fine example of modernist architecture. Book clubs and educational events are also organized by the library.
