Central Greenwich, described as the stretch of land between the Byram and Mianus Rivers and originally known as Horseneck, was a major farming area for Greenwich, until the Miossehaseky Indians traded the property for land elsewhere back in 1686. With the rise of the railroad in the 1860s, Central Greenwich real estate became a shopping magnet, and farmland gave way to the development of Greenwich Avenue as a major shopping center for the town. Central Greenwich is home to the acclaimed Bruce Museum, which in 1998 received accreditation from the American Association of Museums, an honor granted to fewer than 5% of all museums. The museum has an outstanding collection of Connecticut artists, and in particular the Cos Cob School, which consisted of a number of American artists working here in the early 20th century. Located in a light and airy building with 100,000 square feet of space, the Greenwich library initially started out as a small book-lending activity among residents in the 1800s. Since then it has become established as one of our town’s greatest cultural and intellectual assets. The library organizes 1,800 educational and cultural programs and events each year, including well-known author and other guest speaker lectures, a variety of art exhibits, and classes at its technology training center. The library also has one of highest circulations in Connecticut, consisting of about 1.2 million materials and ranging from foreign films to genealogical texts. Wifi is available throughout the library and multiple computers are accessible to the public.

The Bruce Museum of Arts and Science

Originally built as a private home in 1853 by New York Cotton Exchange member, Robert Moffat Bruce, the Bruce Museum has since evolved into a world-class institution. The exhibition space at the museum features work from the arts, sciences, and natural history both regionally and internationally.

YWCA Greenwich

The YWCA Greenwich, founded in 1919, offers over 125 programs ranging from outdoor and indoor sports to pottery classes for individuals of all ages. It also has a great gymnastics program for ages 16 months to 15 years headed by the varsity head coach of Greenwich High School’s Gymnastics Team. The YWCA’s facilities include an indoor swimming pool, which is also home to the nationally ranked Dolphins swim team, a new fitness center, a steam room and sauna, and an indoor water playground. YWCA Greenwich also offers state-of-the-art spin, yoga, and aerobics classes as well as wonderful educational programs for children throughout the day and evening.

The YMCA Greenwich is home to history as it celebrates its centennial milestone of 100 years and beyond. Its facilities boast an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool where both competitive and recreational swimmers can train. In addition, the center offers year-round educational and recreational programs and events for individuals of all ages.
