Rumor has it that at least 60% of homes for sale in Riverside, CT, are bought by sailors to one degree or another. Riverside Yacht Club was founded in 1888 and became quite the attraction for the already swelling population of New Yorkers that were discovering the ease to get to the shores of Greenwich for their summering pleasures.
Â
But back in the early days, potatoes were the name of the game for Riverside. With the storage cellars near the cove, Riverside Avenue was called Potatoe Road in the late 1800s. Like Cos Cob and Old Greenwich, farms and orchards populated the village and were important parts of the local commerce, in addition to fishing but once the train made its way to Riverside and later I-95, the easy access to New York City attracted folks to seek out Riverside as a commuting option and began building year round residences.
Â
Riverside remains a strong community today, with much of its neighborhood life centered on water activities, the local elementary school (which opened its doors in 1933) and the vibrant churches including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.
