This 1912 Italian style villa, with later additions (1928)  is reminiscent of the “farm homes” found in northern Italy, in the Veneto region.  The Ludovici barrel-tiled roof, plank shutters, wrought iron grillwork highlight the thoughtful detail of this  stone and timber home. 

The front door opens to a long loggia, leading to public rooms that are generously proportioned and exquisitely detailed.  While the architect might have taken his inspiration from the informal homes dotting the Italian countryside, the careful attention paid to every element within the home is evident from the bronze casement windows, hardware, fireplaces, and finishes.  The home was commissioned by Clarence Woolley, whom the The Great Estates book of Greenwich describes as “an imaginative and prominent industrialist”.  Woolley has been deemed the force behind developing indoor heating (i.e. radiators) and founded what is now American Standard, and so, it is no surprise that the radiator covers throughout the home are particularly decorative. 

About the Guest Cottage

Just a short distance away, the guest cottage is also in the Italian style.  The first floor consists of a generous living room/dining room and a cook’s kitchen.  The second floor has three bedrooms and two baths.

About the Grounds

Through the gates and down a long, winding drive, one immediately feels transported to the Italian countryside.  Glorious majestic trees dot the landscape and anchor the ten acres.  It is clear that a master landscape designer was behind the creation of Sunridge Farm.  The pool and pool house are carefully positioned beyond expansive gardens.  Just beyond the pump house are raised vegetable gardens and beyond that, a cutting garden.  The allee of massive oak trees winds about to a secret garden.  The tennis court is smartly set off by itself, where the steady hitting of balls, will not interrupt those enjoying nature, the gardens or the pool.
